For the first time, for the last time, again: The Clint Mathis hat trick
Carson, CA — Real Salt Lake traded veteran MF Clint Mathis to the LA Galaxy in the recent SuperDraft-day trade. The move is a hat trick of sorts. It marks Clint’s third appearance on Los Angeles’ roster. His first stint was in 1998 when Mathis was drafted first round by the Galaxy.
This time around the Galaxy traded their first pick in the draft (15th overall) to the MLS Cup champion Real Salt Lake along with a third-round pick in 2011 for Mathis and Real Salt Lake’s first-round pick (16th overall), which was used to acquire UCLA MF Michael Stephens.
“This is what I wanted,” said Mathis. “A lot of people know I’ve wanted to end my career where I started, and that doesn’t always happen.
“When people get wishes, they don’t always come true. Hopefully this is the last place I go and this is where I want to end my career.
“I’ve always enjoyed it here. I’m a redneck who grew up in a small town in Georgia. I love it here; after I came to L.A., I’ve always wanted to live here the rest of my life.”
RSL fans found number 84’s departure bitter-sweet. Clint, being a veteran player, brought a great deal of leadership to the team. He was the voice of experience in clutch moments. Conversely, his age (33 years old) and/or his conditioning appeared to be a factor that upset many fans.It wasn’t uncommon for those in attendance to vocalize their displeasure with Mathis’ lack of hustle.
“Five, six, seven years ago he was one of the best players in the league,” Dema Kovalenko, a teammate of Mathis in New York and Real Salt Lake, said. “He’s gotten a little older, like we all do, but he brings a lot of experience and he can make a difference.
“He can still score goals and he’s a smart player. He played well in the final … he made a difference for them [RSL].”
